Whether we’re breeding for type or production, we want depth of pedigree. When it comes to production ancestry, Your Decision is unique in the breed. One granddam (Rosasharn’s Uni) had 14,887 lbs of official lifetime milk between AGS and ADGA through her lactation beginning at age 13 years, 1 month. But she produced her last kid at age 16, the oldest Nigerian to do so that we are aware of. So she would easily have produced more than 15,000-16,000 lbs of milk in her lifetime. And her lifetime butterfat percentage was about 6.8 percent!
The other granddam of Your Decision was NC Promisedland MG Diva (full sister of Beau, the super milk sire). Diva leads the list for PTAM (Predicted Transmitting Ability Milk) all-time for the breed at 270+. The dam of Your Decision was Yenda, an inbred daughter of Diva that was one of our two Promisedland foundation does.
After more than 20 years breeding Nigerians, one thing is absolutely clear. If there is no significant willingness to milk, udder qualities are tough to document. And if you have to “bag up” a doe for 2-3 days to get her showable, that doesn’t improve your genetics.
Yenda, the inbred daughter of Diva, that was dam of Your Decision, was a super milker with a long lactation. Her wide escutcheon gave her room for an udder that was high and wide in the rear with an excellent foreudder. We hoped her teats would be larger. But she had the most open ribs and depth of barrel we have seen in a Nigerian. It was her obvious “milkiness” and tremendous skin, ribs and barrel that pushed her to an overall VG89 when linear appraised.
Unfortunately, the first Your Decision daughters will not be in milk until 2019. Stay tuned!
Your Decision linear appraised VG85 as yearling. Both sire and dam were VG89. And both fell under new rules which mandated that oversize animals could not be EX. But neither UFO, YENDA, nor Your Decision have produced oversized does!!!
